Assistant Chief of Police/Captain:†
This position assists the Chief of Campus Police in general administration and general management of the Davidson College Campus Police Department. Under the direction and in collaboration with the Chief of Campus Police, the Assistant Chief exercises operational and supervisory authority. In the absence of the Chief of Campus Police, assumes limited delegated duties.
Supervisory Management: Plans, organizes, directs and controls the Uniformed Patrol Operation, Investigation, and Administrative resources of the department. In the absence of the Sergeant, performs the duties of that position. Assigns special projects and additional duties consistent with officer ability and experience. Evaluates operational and employee performance to identify strengths and weaknesses. Monitors and ensures the timely completion of evaluations and conducts performance evaluations on subordinates. Administers leadership skills to enhance employee performance, morale, and teamwork concepts. Assists with employee recruitment, hiring, and field training.
Mid-Level Management: Manages operational activities to assure the use of resources is consistent with accomplishing the Collegeís goals and objectives as outlined in the departmentís strategic plan. Manages the operational sections of the Campus Police Departmentís annual budget. Manages resources effectively and efficiently to provide public safety and emergency services twenty-hour a day, seven days a week. Manages departmental operations in accordance with requirements of Federal and State Laws. Manages College personnel and Department policies. Oversees Clery Act Compliance and assists the College Title IX Coordinator with Title IX investigations.
Enforcement of Laws, College Rules and Regulations: Performs the full range of Campus Police Officer duties as necessary.
Other Duties: Administrative support roles as departmental liaison with other agencies, project and/or event coordinator (security for basketball games, special visitors, etcÖ). Collaborate with College administration, faculty, staff, and students, surrounding law enforcement agencies and emergency services agencies to ensure understanding and commitment to emergency management and community policing principles. Provides physical security assessments, collaborate with campus partners, assists with records management.
Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred; Certified through completion of the North Carolina Justice Academy Basic Law Enforcement Program. Possess and maintain a valid NC driverís license, honorable discharge from military service if served. Must be a US Citizen free of felony, gross misdemeanor or any crime involving moral turpitude. Must be able to testify in court. Demonstrates knowledge, abilities, and experience in patrol operations and procedures, investigations, emergency response. Must have six (6) years uninterrupted, full-time, commissioned law enforcement experience with a law enforcement agency. At least two (2) years of full-time and regular service in a first-line supervisory or mid-level management position at the time of the application.
